PIGMENT ABNORMALITIES
Creams, ointments, chemical peels, microderm abrasion, liquid nitrogen, electrocautery, and surgery are all modalities used in our office to treat skin pigment abnormalities. Nevertheless, in many instances laser has been shown to be much more successful, less costly, have less side effects and is more likely to be permanent.
We treat age spots, liver spots, birthmarks, mask of pregnancy, pigment changes caused by birth control pills, as well as pigmented areas resulting from past injury, burns, and surgery.
The best treatment for your particular skin problem should be assessed by the physician. Most simple pigmented spots are best treated with laser. Laser not only removes pigment within the skin, but actually kills the cells that make the pigment. This not only removes the pigment you see, but also prevents the pigment from reforming. Most other treatments cannot limit pigment recurrence like laser can. In addition, vascular blotches and the red blushes from roscea can be treated impressively with laser. Many small pigmented areas can be removed completely with just one treatment. Larger areas may require repeated treatments to achieve optimal success.
Finally, it is important to first have these areas assessed for possible cancer or precancerous changes.
Office handouts and consultations can be obtained if you are interested.
